Chandelier Size Guide

Selecting the right size chandelier is essential to harmonize with your space. Follow this simple guide to find the perfect chandelier for your room’s proportions.

1. Calculate the Right Diameter

Use this formula to find the ideal chandelier diameter based on the size of your room:

Diameter = Room Length + Room Width (in feet)

For example, a room that is 12 feet by 15 feet would give:

12 + 15 = 27 inches

This will be the recommended chandelier diameter. You may adjust slightly for style or proportion preferences.

2. Consider Ceiling Height

  • Standard Ceiling (8 feet): The chandelier should be 20 to 24 inches in diameter.
  • For Higher Ceilings (9-10 feet): Add 3 inches for every additional foot.
  • For Very High Ceilings (Over 10 feet): Consider larger chandeliers (24 inches or more) or multi-tier options.

3. Ideal Chandelier Height

The height of the chandelier is important for visibility and elegance. Here’s the guideline:

  • Dining / Living Rooms: Hang the chandelier 30 to 36 inches above the table.
  • Entryways / Hallways: The chandelier should be at least 7 feet above the floor.
  • If the ceiling is higher, add 3 inches for each additional foot of ceiling height.

4. Light Coverage

Ensure that your chandelier provides ample lighting for the room’s size. Consider wattage and the number of bulbs:

  • Small Room (Up to 100 sq ft): 60-100 watts
  • Medium Room (100-250 sq ft): 100-200 watts
  • Large Room (250+ sq ft): 200-400 watts

5. Style and Placement

  • Dining Table: Choose a chandelier with a width of 1/2 to 2/3 the width of the table.
  • Living Rooms & Entryways: Choose a size that complements your space—neither too large nor too small.
